The below report has been provided courtesy of South Dartmoor Community College – The long journey, beginning at 5am, was a great experience for the young Bromley players and they now progress to the Trophy semi final!
After the previous weeks postponement due to the snow, SDCC were happy to welcome Bromley to Ashburton for the trophy quarter final.
It was evident quite early on that this was going to be a fantastic game with both teams showing from the off that they could play. It was however SDCC who had the better of the early exchanges and were rewarded with a goal when Finley Pearce rose to get a flick on a free kick from inside SDCCs own half. The Bromley keeper made a good reaction save however Finley was already following in his own flick on and was able to put the ball away from close range for a goal straight off the tactics board! Bromley didn’t panic and continued to play some great football particularly causing SDCC problems down the right wing with Cameron Slatter managing to deliver a number of testing crosses into the box. Bromleys equaliser actually came from one of these crosses that was whipped along the ground, eluding the SDCC keeper and met by the Bromley striker to calmly pass the ball into the empty goal at the far post. The game continued to be a close affair with both teams playing quality football however Bromley were starting to create a few more chances. Such was the quality of the football it was the slightest lapse in concentration by the SDCC defence that allowed a Bromley striker to get through one on one with the SDCC keeper and he kept his head to slot home and give Bromley the lead. Both teams continue to play some great football and created a number of chances however the first half end 2-1 to the visitors.
The Second half started much like the first ended however Bromley extended their lead when a free kick taken by the SDCC keeper hit one of the wires that carry’s the net that separates the pitch. Having hit the wire the ball fell kindly to a Bromley striker who made the most of his good fortune to give Bromley a 3-1 lead. SDCC we’re pushing to get back in the game and were creating some chances however Bromley were disciplined and kept their shape well and were rewarded when they intercepted a goal kick to create another one v one with the goal keeper which was once again well taken to make it 4-1. With nothing to lose SDCC went to 3 at the back however this enabled Bromley to find a gap a great pass split the defence to create another one v one which was once again well finished to make it 5-1. SDCC continued to play some good football and were rewarded with a consolation goal when a free kick into the box was touched on to Harvey Andrews who had created himself some space from some clever movement giving him time to find the bottom corner of the goal from the edge of the 18 years box. The game finished 5-2 to the visitors.
It was a fantastic game and a great advert for the JPL. The fortune of the 4th goal of the game was decisive in that it gave Bromley a cushion. Bromley did however manage that cushion extremely well and although 5-2 may be slightly flattering they were clearly worthy of the win. We would like to thank Bromley for undertaking the long journey to Devon and genuinely wish them luck in the rest of the competition and all the best for the rest of the season.
